According to The Daily Mail, soccer prodigy Eden Hazard has expressed interest in moving to Manchester United after the Lille playmaker was watched by Sir Alex Ferguson last Saturday night.
The 21-year-old is widely coveted by many of the elite teams in Europe including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Tottenham, and to a lesser extent, Arsenal.
Despite the re-emergence of Paul Scholes from retirement, United are still somewhat short of options in midfield.
Ryan Giggs has been in stellar form, however, at the ripe old age of 39, his days at Old Trafford are obviously nearing an end. Brazilian midfielder Anderson has shown signs of progress throughout his time in Manchester, but it seems unlikely that Sir Alex Ferguson will use the physical, defensive youngster as the centre piece of his midfield. Michael Carrick has proven consistent and resourceful, but lacks the imagination and creativity of a world class midfielder such as Hazard.
Loads of speculation has been placed on Wesley Snider of Inter Milan joining the club to fill the vacant position, but given his absurdly steep wages coupled with the almost perversely high transfer fee, it would seem as though shelling out that much cash for a player in his late 20’s would yield little return on investment down the road.
When asked about the prospect of moving to the red half of Manchester, Hazard told La Voix du Nord:
Of course [United interest me], this is a club that excites everyone, but for now my focus is on Lille. But yes, it is a pleasure to be watched by one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best … Perhaps Spanish football would be better for me, rather than the English…But if you want to be champion, you would need to play with Barcelona or Real Madrid…The opportunities would be much smaller. The competition would be strong at Tottenham too, but less so that at Barca or Real…I think I can learn the most in England. You play a big game every week and the atmosphere is great.
