Liverpool icon, Kenny Dalglish, has been fired as the manager of the club following a less-than-stellar season at Anfield.

Under the guidance of Dalglish, Liverpool experienced their worst season in nearly two decades, finishing the campaign 37 points behind the two Manchester teams.

A statement was issued earlier in the day:

“Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club announce that Kenny Dalglish is to leave his post today as manager after having his contract terminated. After a careful and deliberative review of the season the club came to the decision that a change was appropriate. It is not a decision that was reached lightly or hastily. The search for a new manager will begin immediately.”

Critics of ‘King Kenny,’ will point to his poor track record of expensive signings, including the likes of  Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson, and Charlie Adam, all of whom have been considered to be busts.

In addition, the manager’s insistent and steadfast backing of Luis Suarez during his ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra did little to help instil confidence in his abilities as a leader with Fenway Sports.

In total, Dalglish has won nine league titles, three European Cup trophies, three FA Cups, and five League Cups during his 15 years as both a player and a two-time manager at the club.
